Many people are practicing techniques to improve their health such as meditation, exercise and improved diet.  As this is done, a deeper awareness often develops concerning the flow of subtle energies in and around the body and the connection of these energies with one’s health.  This developing awareness validates the ancient idea of ‘life force energy’ as the cause of health and its lack as the cause of illness.  The existence of ‘life force energy’ and the necessity for it to flow freely in and around one’s body to maintain health has been studied and acknowledged by health care practitioners and scientists.

If our ‘life force’ is low or blocked, we are more likely to get sick, but if it is high and free flowing, we more easily maintain health and a feeling of well-being.  A major factor that disrupts and weakens the flow of ‘life force energy’ is stress.  Stress is often caused by conflicting thoughts and feelings that get lodged in one’s subtle energy systems.  These include fear, worry, doubt, anger, and anxiety.  Medical research has determined that continual stress can block the body’s natural ability to repair, regenerate and protect itself, resulting in 75-95% of all doctor visits.

The effects of unreleased stress range from minor aches to major health concerns, such as heart disease, digestive disorders, respiratory and skin problems.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of healing and self-improvement that everyone can use.  Reiki healing sessions work on all physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.

Reiki is the Japanese word for universal life force energy and is the name of a healing therapy which maximizes the benefit from this universal energy. Reiki was rediscovered in the 1800’s in Japan by Mikao Usui, a Buddhist who dedicated his life to the study of hands-on healing methods.

How does it work?

Reiki practitioners have received both instruction and Reiki attunements which raise and accelerate their energy flow. The practitioner provides a Reiki session by the gentle act of “laying on of hands” with the intention to be of assistance. The result is that the health giving life force energy in the recipient’s body becomes amplified and balanced.  Reiki sessions can even be done remotely with a practitioner directing the Reiki energy anywhere and anytime to an individual or group.

What are its benefits?

Reiki complements and enhances all types of medical treatment. It helps relieve stress, agitation and acute and chronic pain; it is helpful as an aid for sleeping; and it also can be an energizer. It promotes the release of emotions such as grief, anger or anxiety and provides comfort in palliative care.  Reiki accelerates wound healing. It produces a feeling of mental clarity, calmness, well-being and spiritual connection in the recipient. Reiki aids  healing in virtually every known illness and injury. Every person responds differently to Reiki. The person being treated is not “healed” by the practitioner.  The person’s healing comes from the life force flowing through the Reiki practitioner.

What can I expect from a Reiki session?

Having a Reiki session is really quite simple. With an in-person treatment, you will either sit on a chair or lie on a comfortably padded massage table, fully clothed, for approximately 30 minutes to one hour.  Modesty is respected at all times. The Reiki practitioner will place his or her hands gently on top of your clothing over key positions on your body. Many people fall asleep during the treatment because they feel so relaxed. You are a participant in your health care and are always in control.   Reiki can be performed on a patient while he is lying down, sitting or standing. No adjustment in clothing needs to be made, since Reiki flows through any barrier, including casts.

The techniques of directing Reiki energy and how to become a Reiki Master are covered in The Complete Independent Reiki Mastery Course. I use a powerful array of Reiki energy and over 2 dozen complementary energy healing modalities to send healing energy into your entire energetic system to clear and balance your chakras, auric fields, and any energy blockages affecting your overall health and wellbeing.

In distance energy healing sessions, you would just sit back or lie down and relax on the scheduled day of the session from 7-8 PM in your time zone.  If you are not able to do so during that time, the energies will come to you just the same.  Simply continue going about your activities while being mindful that healing energies are being sent to you.

What you may feel Before, During and After a Session

Some people may have odd aches and pains surface and release.  The pains are caused by the energy clearing out the blockages. Also old symptoms can be aggravated as the energy works it’s way through the resistance of the blockages. Sometimes the aches and pains may last from a few minutes to a day or longer. If you feel this happening to you, don't be alarmed and just know it is very helpful and healing.

There may be some tiredness caused by the energy working through the blockages and releasing toxins. The body needs to release the toxins and your organs of elimination will be energetically supported to help with this.  If you are feeling tired, try and get as much rest as possible.

Some people can feel more emotional during this time and that is good. The energy helps to clear repressed emotions which is often the cause of illness and disease. When we release the old emotions, deep healing can take place.Just allow the emotions to come up and don’t try and hold them down.

Are there any side effects?

There are no side effects or contraindications with Reiki; it is non-invasive and safe for all ages from premature babies to the elderly.

Is Reiki safe to use during pregnancy?

There is evidence that the use of Reiki before, during, and after pregnancy has positive results both for the mother and baby. Reiki has become a more mainstream and acceptable form of alternative treatment. It is becoming integrated within hospitals, recreation and major sports organizations, as well as in private practice. It is a popular alternative treatment that doctors are now referring to their patients.  In fact, the National Institutes of Health National Cancer Intituties Pain Clinic's nurse practitioners are all certified Reiki practitioners.  One Reiki Master-Teacher, Beth Simmons Stapor, reported in a Reiki News article that a client who was four months pregnant decided to take a Reiki I workshop. During her attunement, she experienced the baby responding to the energy flow. As her pregnancy progressed she gave her baby reiki treatments. After his birth he was nicknamed the 'Reiki Baby', as he was so relaxed and contented. The mother reported that on many occasions it appeared that her baby reached out to exchange Reiki energy with her and others. She has also used Reiki to help him through teething, childhood falls, and illnesses.

Is Reiki a religion?

Reiki is not a religion, as it holds no creed or doctrine. It is not a belief system, therefore, no mental preparation or direction is needed to receive a treatment, only a desire to receive and accept the energy. Having a Reiki session does not involve massage, although it is often used in complement with massage. Since Reiki requires no specific setting or preparation, it can be utilized in all hospital environments, including outpatient clinics, emergency rooms, intensive-care units, operating rooms and all other patient settings.

What Are Attunements, Empowerments and Initiations?

Attunement is usually used to describe a process where someone else opens and changes the energetic structure of a person.  A Reiki master can perform remote and in-person attunements.

Empowerments differ from attunements in that they are energies where you pick up the essence of the animal or object, etc that you are attracted to.

Initiation is used in some systems instead of attunement because of its implications to a process which emerges from within. An Initiator simply creates a space where the initiate is able to tap into his/her own inner resources. This procedure is about creating a remembrance, a resonance, to what is already “there”.
